 "What a fascinating work! These ‘energetic, cinematic pop piano’ compositions are certainly that; and provide for an imaginative and innovative ‘way in’ for late intermediate to advanced students to experience and gain valuable insight into popular styles of playing and writing.

The presentation of the works is innovative in that the pieces are designed to act as ‘stand alone’ compositions, enabling students to practice idiomatic techniques associated with the genre (syncopated, driving rhythms; chords in a range of voicings, and set to standard pop chord progressions; catchy melodic riffs). However, the real excitement comes when the student is then ready to play along with the backing tracks (available on the composer’s website and his YouTube channel). This gives the student a brilliant insight and experience, not only of how the solo piano part fits in to the wider context of other instruments (e.g. drums, keyboard synths, guitars, orchestral strings), but what it might be like playing as part of a real pop band. So inspiring and motivating!

I am also quite interested to see that the composer has incorporated information about his ‘Music Motivation Mentorship Map’ which outlines key skills and techniques, and relevant aspects of music theory, set into the context of his teaching approach. The composer does well to extend the motivation and create a sense intrigue by including an excerpt of once of his fiction books for teens/young adults.

Each piece in the collection has some supportive, useful guidance from the composer in terms of key learning points, e.g. mood / character / musical detail to be mindful of. He also incorporates interesting expression markings at the start of each piece, which are quite evocative, e.g. ‘Escapade’ is to be played “With a gentle strength!”

Overall, this is a highly interesting collection of pieces that clearly display the composer’s strengths as an educator and mentor, as well as a composer. The composer’s enthusiasm, energy, and passion for music education is evident; and ‘Momentum’ would therefore be a useful addition to any student’s repertoire, who wishes to develop their pop technique and musical understanding in an imaginative and exciting way."
